Thunder Biotech is developing genetically engineered CAR macrophages, which they call MOTO-CAR immunotherapy, to treat cancer and prevent relapse. The macrophages engineered by Thunder Biotech help cancer patients’ immune cells recognize and attack solid tumors. Specifically, MOTO-CARs are engineered to contain tumor-specific receptors that directly adhere to the tumor cell surface. This allows the macrophages to initiate tumor cell destruction, as well as recruit T cells to eliminate the tumor. This T cell response will then provide the body with a memory response in order to prevent tumor recurrence. Thunder Biotech’s unique approach essentially “re-educates” a cancer patient’s immune system, restoring the patient’s ability to recognize and destroy cancer cells in the future.
