Living Carbon is using the power of plants to boost carbon removal. Plants naturally take up carbon dioxide through photosynthesis; however this is not enough to reverse the impact of industrialization. Living Carbon is developing photosynthesis enhancements to help trees grow faster and capture more carbon. Living Carbon’s first method involves a metal accumulation trait so trees can absorb more metals in their roots and stems. Trait modification involves gene discovery using omics technology, gene editing and analytical biochemistry. The metals slow wood decay so that carbon remains in the wood longer. Living Carbon is looking to expand its technology to more plant species as well as other traits like nitrogen fixation, drought tolerance and permanent carbon storage.
