About:
Hazel Technologies is using biotechnology to reduce food waste. The company has developed Hazel, a powder that reduces food waste by improving the shelf life and quality of produce during storage. Hazel releases 1-MCP, an antifungal vapor that reduces a plant’s respiration rate and increases the plant’s resistance to ethylene, a hormone that triggers fruit and vegetable ripening (and ultimately spoilage). Each Hazel product is tailored to the specific produce, because each crop has a different respiration rate and level of ethylene production. Hazel has already used their product to prevent spoilage of apples, avocados and kiwis and hopes to expand their reach to more shippers, growers and retailers.
